In Ist das normal?, Milena Sundari Nowak and Tatjana Mahlke have a look at their own privileges, critique power, question current structures, and try to raise their awareness of those same structures.
Are you restricted in your everyday life because of your physical abilities? Can you move freely within your country? Do you identify with the gender assigned to you at birth? These are just three of the many questions that follow the two choreographers and dancers throughout the piece.
Again and again, they encounter the term support and the question of how support gets constructed politically and is carried out on structural and personal levels.
Ist das normal? listens attentively, takes apart our ego, and invites the audience, too, to perceive themselves in their own existence.
Milena Sundari Nowak is a freelance dancer and choreographer based in Berlin. Her artistic interest lies in macrosocial themes that deal with people’s coexistence. For instance, her choreography has included pieces about approaches to German history or the pressure of today’s performance-oriented society (together with Tatjana Mahlke). Milena tries to follow the meaning behind the movement rather than the form.
She is a member of the interdisciplinary collective Zookunft.Project and completed a three-year contemporary dance education in Berlin, in September 2020.
Milena Sundari Nowak particpated in the 2021 edition of A.PART Festival in dialogue with Asya Ashman. Click here to check out their previous contributions.
Tatjana Mahlke is a freelance dancer, choreographer, and teacher from Berlin.
